Last year, Blizzard teased that they were hard at work at making “Hero 27”, the next character that would be playable in Overwatch. Fans went into a frenzy wondering who it would be. Then, recently, Blizzard started dropping teasers, recalling a battle in the past that saw Reinhardt save Torbjorn’s life. This, and the other contents of those teases, led many to believe that they were going to be bringing in Torbjorn’s daughter, Brigitte into the mix. Turns out, they were spot on.
In a Developer Update, Overwatch creative director Jeff Kaplan broke down who Brigitte was, why she’s in the game, and how she plays. Turns out, while she originally wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and be a master weaponsmith, she, later on, believed she could be more useful keeping Reinhardt safe, and thus became his Squire. Yet, as time went on she wanted to protect him even more, and thus became the character you’re going to play as in the game.
Kaplan notes that she is a Support character, but also one that plays like a Tank. Which will give some players creative ways to use her. For example, her primary weapon is called the “Rocket Flail”, which apparently can extend to hit foes from far away. One of her abilities is “Whip Shot”, which will extend her flail even further, and even knock foes back if it hits.
Another key part of her arsenal is a Barrier Shield, however, unlike Reinhardt’s, it’s much smaller, and only protects Brigitte and whoever is directly behind her. Yet, she uses it well, for another ability she has is Shield Bash, where she’ll lunge forward, and any foe hit by her shield will be stunned.
