Could Marvel Make An Interconnected Video Game Universe Starting With Spider-Man?

Marvel is on the tips of everyone’s tongues right now, for in one week, Avengers: Infinity War will arrive. With it, may come the biggest box office opening ever. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest accomplishments in video game history, and it’s got many wondering, could there be a new interconnected universe…featuring video games? The idea comes because of the fact that Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man title is coming later this year and may be the perfect stepping stone to make that idea happen.

It’s certainly an intriguing notion. And like the grand scale of the MCU, it would be something never done before. The question is, would Marvel even consider it? The answer is yes, for in an interview with The Telegraph, creative director of Marvel Games Bill Rosemann talked about the possibility, and how they would like take a similar route to the MCU if done:

“The first intention was, let’s just make the best Iron Man movie. We’re approaching it the same way. This is going to be hard enough. Let’s just make the best Spider-Man game. Let’s do that. The rest will take care of itself. Who knows what the future holds? We just want to make sure each individual game is awesome, is great. Again, we don’t want to trap people and contain people. We want to give them freedom.”

Speaking objectively…that’s quite fair. After all, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they planned for two films, two shots to get stuff done and build up their good will. With the games universe, they would likely have to do the same thing. For as much as the Spider-Man title is hyped, if it somehow flops in one capacity or another, Marvel would likely be shy about trying to make something else in this vein.
