Alright, let’s start this Gears 5 PC review. Gears of War is a cover third-person shooter franchise that’s been around for quite some time. Gears 5 picks up from where Gears of War 4 left things at. If your memory is hazy, Gears 5 has a brief video recap at the beginning that refreshes your memory.

Gears 5 and its Narrative

For the first time, we step into the shoes of Kait Diaz, who is struggling to come to terms with her mother’s death. She’s also unraveling the complex roots of her family tree and coping with her emotional baggage following the events of Gears of War 4. Meanwhile, humanity is again threatened by the Swarm, the Locust horde’s successor. Things are hectic as always, so prepare to get into the midst of the chaos with your gun loaded.

Gears 5 puts a lot of effort into its story and characters

This is also an excellent starting point, indicating that the Gears 5 Campaign will focus more on narrative and story components than its predecessors, which is a pro and a con because some people are only here for the carnage.
While we’ve seen Marcus, JD, Cole, and the rest of the gang grow and evolve over the years, Gears 5 intends to flesh out further these characters – an admirable ambition that doesn’t always work out as you’d expect.

Marcus Fenix and the Gears have a special place in our hearts because they are flawed heroes who have become less meat-headed with each new installment of the franchise. In Gears 5, the Coalition aims to delve deeper into this ‘human’ element: the politics behind Gears, the contentious decisions made by some members, and their impact on the world around them. However, it feels as if the devs haven’t gone far enough, as if the game has only dipped its toes into the sea and has no intention of swimming into deeper waters. Strange, considering there are many moments in the game where I expected more exploration of some characters and their actions.

Gears 5’s narrative focus is nice, but most of us aren’t here for that

It’s also tough to warm up to Kait as the new protagonist because we haven’t grown up with her. We don’t know much, except what tiny bits Gears 5 shows us throughout the game. Change isn’t necessarily terrible, and a new appearance is obviously needed. Still, Kait is a character I didn’t connect with a lot.

I also didn’t expect to focus on the story when I started working on this Gears 5 PC review, and the franchise isn’t known for its rich narrative. The series has never tried to be anything it isn’t, and it understands its own strengths: Gears 5 has excellent multiplayer and solid combat mechanics, which I’m talking about later. While it may not succeed in fully immersing players in the plot, I like that the devs wanted to develop the storyline more. We also see a ton more character development, which was surprising. The game just needed to put a bit more extra focus on its whole narrative.

Despite this, the lore portions of Gears 5 are the greatest they’ve ever been. There are more lore items than ever before, including coins, posters, books, and a plethora of nooks and crannies to explore, ranging from settlements to hidden research facilities to snow-covered mountains. Rather than the tale and dialogue, the setting is what creates the world.

Gears 5 and its New Additions

The Coalition has become somewhat adventurous with Gears 5, which is something that the series needed. With Gears of War 4, the developer took over the Gears series from Epic Games. There wasn’t much the team wanted to modify in fundamental gameplay. After all, no one wants their favorite franchise to transform into something unrecognizable.

After the positive reception to Gears of War 4, and fans appearing to approve of the change of hands, The Coalition has gone even further to try out some new open world and choice-based components.

Most ambitious Gears Campaign so far

With Gears 5 being billed as the “largest Gears to date,” it’s no surprise that there are more exploring opportunities than ever before. So while the Gears 5 Campaign got some love, its world received a ton of attention and care. You now get access to the fantastic (but difficult to operate) skiff vehicle, which allows you to explore the most extensive maps we’ve ever seen. It’s a palate cleanser that lets players take a breather between huge tasks, taking in the magnificent landscape The Coalition has built and slowing down the pace when needed.

This Campaign still feels like it needed a bit more to be whole

However, it doesn’t feel like enough yet again. The elements of the open-world are precisely that: elements. I played Gears 5 on PC, and I was teased about being able to examine and explore wherever you choose too many times, only to frequently run across very evident walls that harshly remind you that this isn’t the case. There are only a few instances like this, which almost seems unnecessary.

The Coalition has thankfully given players more freedom to pursue objectives in various ways, and that’s an excellent addition. The game gives you more freedom in terms of how you choose to play. Will you approach a matter quietly or with all guns blazing in genuine Gears fashion?

While this is only a simple tweak, but it results in a far more dynamic fighting experience that allows you to feel like you’re doing more than just running and gunning your way along linear gameplay paths. But now it’s time for this Gears 5 PC review to talk about the gameplay. The shooting part of the Gears 5 gameplay formula, which is probably the best it has ever been.

Gears 5 and its Shooter Aspect

Gears 5 may not excel in the story department or experimental components. But the shooting aspect of the Gear 5 gameplay experience is polished, engaging, and fun as hell.

Is Gears 5 the best cover shooter on PC?

Gears has improved with each new installment despite remaining true to its cover-shooter roots, with Gears 5 on PC is one of the most refined cover-shooters on the market. The game’s rhythm of firing, reloading, swapping cover, and switching weapons feels better than ever before; much of the clunkiness we’ve witnessed in the past is gone. Mowing down horde waves, fluidly dodging and cutting through those daring enough to step in the way of your Lancer, is more satisfying than ever.

It’s everything a Gears fan wants

The over-the-top action movie cheese of the 1980s is still here – and, to be honest, it’s a sight to behold. Each firefight is a bloodcurdling frenzy that reminds us how satisfying it is to play Gears when you just want to turn off your brain and blast your way through hordes of foes.

We can also update our new robot friend, Jack, thanks to the Gears 5 DLC called Hivebuster. Components required to increase Jack’s powers, such as his health, zapper, core, and stealth, may be found all around the world, offering you more methods and options in battle scenarios than ever before.

Gears 5 and its Multiplayer

Now let’s talk about the Gears 5 multiplayer. Gears games excel in their unique co-op modes, designed to be social games that you and your friends can repeatedly play. This entry is no exception, and Gears 5 and its multiplayer modes are vastly superior to those previously available in the franchise.

The Coalition promised the biggest Gears game yet, with more co-op and PVP choices than you can shake a stick at, and it didn’t lie. I’m pretty sure I spent most of this Gears 5 PC review playing PvP.

Each Gears 5 co-op mode is fun for a while

Horde, Escape, and Versus are the three multiplayer modes in Gears 5. Horde mode is for Gears 5 co-op fans that want to go against 50 waves of AI-controlled horde attackers, which become progressively difficult as the game progresses. You gain power as you progress through the game, which you may use to improve your defenses and weaponry. It’s a time-consuming slog that’s also a lot of fun, as it always has been. If you just want constant shooter action with tons of bullets flying everywhere and the ground littered with bodies, the Gears 5 co-op experience you’re looking for is Horde mode.

Next up is the new Escape mode. Escape mode is a maze of gun-blazing chaos in which you collaborate with a team of three players (online or local co-op) to race across an enemy hive area as quickly as possible, destroying anything in your way while avoiding the toxic gas coming up behind you.

For those who don’t have the time to play horde mode, escape mode provides a rapid burst of Gears 5 multiplayer action. However, due to a lack of maps and characters, it runs the risk of getting monotonous.

Gears 5 and its VS Mode

Finally, when it comes to Gears 5 multiplayer, there’s nothing better than the VS mode. It includes a combination of old and new arcade modes like Tour of Duty, Bootcamp, Escalation, King of the Hill, Arms Race, Dodgeball, Execution, Guardian, Team Deathmatch, and Warzone, among others.

As close to perfect as a Gears multiplayer mode can get

These rapid battles are ideal for fans of traditional Gears (or most FPS) multiplayer modes with a little more bite and slicker gameplay. For veterans of the series, Gears 5 multiplayer always comes down to chaotic and tension-filled VS matches where you’re sweating out the other guy and just waiting for him to move to another cover. It’s fast, strategic, and incredibly competitive. Honestly, Gears 5 on PC shines brightest once you get in the rhythm of its VS mode, and Team Deathmatch is something that never gets boring or repetitive.

While loading times can get a little annoying at times, Gears 5’s multiplayer options are its crowning glory.

So, should you buy Gears 5 on PC?

So, what’s the final verdict of this Gears 5 review? Well, it’s the best game in the series to date, cementing Gears of War’s position as the best shooter on the market. It’s challenging to find a game like this that has better shooting mechanics, more multiplayer modes, adrenaline-pumping firefights, and a story that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

It’s a bit of a tease when building a tense story or a universe we can sink our teeth into. We wish The Coalition had gone even further in telling a captivating and profound story that they only hint at. Those who know what to expect from a Gears game, on the other hand, are likely to be pleased with the current installment.

That’s the end of this Gears 5 PC review, stay tuned for more gamers!
