Head of Minecraft Matt Booty Promoted to Head of Microsoft Studios

Following the recent promotion of Phil Spencer, who now serves as the executive vice president of Microsoft, the position of head of Microsoft Studios has been filled by Minecraft team leader Matt Booty.

Booty will now be in charge of overseeing the development and publishing strategy at Microsoft, which will hopefully help Microsoft continue to diversify in the industry. Spencer will now be in charge of the overall grand strategy of games, whilst Booty will be in charge of implementing those strategies. Going forward, Booty will be reporting to Spencer, whilst the remaining studio chiefs will be under Booty’s command.

Spencer explained in a recent interview with GamesBeat: “I wanted to make sure we had the right organization in place to deliver on our content goals. With that, I made the decision that I wanted to anoint a leader of our Microsoft Studios organization, which if you’ve tracked it, I’ve had the leaders of our individual franchises reporting to me for the last three and a half years.”

Ultimately, the console will now be shifting to game content, which was the catalyst for bringing Booty in for future projects on Xbox One and beyond: “That’s going to be critical to our long-term success, so I’ve asked Matt Booty to step up into the role of leading Microsoft Studios.”
