Insomniac’s Spider-Man Game Gets “Seal of Approval”

When it comes to Marvel, their brand is just as important as the superheroes they wield under their banner. As such, while they make “lend out” some of their characters for things like video games, it doesn’t always mean they “approve” of the result. But when it comes to the upcoming Spider-Man title from Insomniac, it’s a different story. For when you play the game, you’ll get to see the now classic Marvel “flipbook” opening, because this game has their seal of approval.

“You may have noticed that our most recent trailers feature the Marvel flipbook logo at the beginning,” said James Stevenson, community director at Insomniac Games said during a play session with Marvel’s Spider-Man. “It’s the first time ever that a Marvel video game has been given permission to use that logo. When you see that Marvel flipbook, it’s like a seal of quality. That’s when you kind of get the chills and think, ‘this is a Marvel experience. This is a blockbuster experience.’”

Spider-Man

It’s not surprising that this Spider-man game gets the seal of approval. Mind you, before, Marvel couldn’t give it out for past games because the games were referencing the films that weren’t in their banner (as this was before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was formed). But now, with Spider-Man back under their banner in full (more-or-less), and the game itself already getting rave reviews from all who have played it, not approving it may have been weird. But according to Stevenson, it wasn’t an immediate thing:

“But it wasn’t until right at the end that Marvel was like, ‘ok, the level of polish and presentation is good enough for our seal of approval,’” Stevenson said. “So I think they are happy with it. I’m sure not just Marvel Games, but Marvel as a whole are excited about our Spider-Man game. Hopefully they will get behind it in a big way.”

The game arrives on PS4 tomorrow September 7th.
