Insomniac’s Spider-Man Has Sold 9 Million Units Worldwide

As sad as it may sound, most people in the gaming industry rate the success of a game based on the sales of the title itself. It could be one of the best-reviewed games ever, but if it doesn’t sell, it’s not as good as it could’ve been. For Insomniac Games, they had the honor and burden of making the first truly modern Spider-Man title…that would actually be good (movie spin-offs…am I right?) And sure enough, they made a winner in every sense of the word.

The game was incredible, amazing even, and both gamers and reviewers loved it in spades. Now, Sony has released a statement proclaiming just how well it has done:

Marvel’s Spider-Man, launched in September 2018, has cumulatively sold through more than 9 million copies worldwide as of November 25, 2018,” the company noted.

That is an incredible number, and given the number of PS4’s out there, and the fact that it’s been a month after the cutoff for this tally, 10 million units sold is all but a guarantee.

Spider-Man

This makes the game one of the best-selling titles of the year, and definitely one of the best-selling games on the PS4. If you’re curious as to what has beaten it, Monster Hunter World was confirmed to have sold over 10 million months before Spider-Man. Then, there’s Call of Duty Black Ops 4, which also has done similar numbers, and finally, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was confirmed to have sold 17+ million within its first month of release. But still, this is great company to keep, and proof that if done right, big superhero titles will continue to sell.

Two of the biggest factors for this games success though was the massive storm of word-of-mouth praising the game on Facebook and Twitter, along with the PS4 bundle that the game had both before and during the Black Friday season, encouraging more people to get the system just to play this game.
