It’s no secret that Overwatch players have been asking for changes in the meta. A stale meta is boring, always seeing the same heroes and hero comps make you not want to even boot up Competitive Play. Players want a change, and Blizzard is finally listening to them, in a way. Let me introduce you to Hero Pools. This feature is coming with the 1.45 patch. How will it work? Instead of letting players ban the heroes they don’t want to see, Blizzard will do that for them. A strange feature to be sure, and the start of Season 21 will see some Heroes disabled in competitive play for a whole week. The design team is the one that decides which Heroes need to take a break for a week, not the players. Naturally, this will not affect quick play and arcade, only Competitive Play.

This means the meta will change from one week to another. A strange decision, putting the power of banning Heroes in the hands of the design team and not the players. The Overwatch matches will definitely be affected by the Hero Pools, for better or for worse. Blizzard plans to monitor the feature to see how it affects matches overall and to see if the system needs any change or refinement.
