The Overwatch League May Get First Female Player

Blizzard has gone to great lengths to make the Overwatch League. After all, this is the major esports event unlike any done before. This is one where teams of players are recruited by cities to represent them and to fight for the cup. So far, it’s been a great success. However, people aren’t blind, and so they noticed something very odd when the teams were unveiled. Mainly…there are no female players on any team in the League. That’s very wrong in many people’s eyes.

However, that may be changing, for ESPN reports (isn’t it awesome that ESPN is reporting this?) that Kim “Geguri” Se-yeon is set to join the Shanghai Dragons. Who, ironically, are the worst team in the Overwatch tournament. They’re currently 0-8 in their matches, and it’s very possible that they could go winless in this first season. Thus, they’re bringing in Kim and a few other South Korean players to shake things up.

Kim "Geguri" Se-yeon Overwatch

As for the resume of Kim “Geguri” Se-yeon, her skill speaks for herself. She reached the No.1 spot of the South Korean tank rankings in Overwatch, and is the No.6 player overall in the South Korean rankings, so she definitely deserves to be on the team. Her main character is Zarya.

On a more personal level, Kim actually doesn’t believe the accusations that female players are being discriminated against in the Overwatch League. Which is very interesting. What’s more, she doesn’t want her “story” to be used to “forward ideologies” in regards to this topic.

There are two sides to this issue for sure. On one hand, these teams are meant to be comprised of the best players in the world for this title. Which sometimes means you have to have an all-male team. But what’s ticking people off is that there are talented female players, like Kim, who might not have even have gotten a glimpse at being a part of this.

Hopefully, Kim is the first of many to join the League.
