The Overwatch League Officially Has First Female Player

Diversity is a constant battle in our world today. But not just on the highest levels of government and world acknowledgment, but also in the simple things as video game competitions. The Overwatch League has been a great success for Blizzard, but many noticed that there wasn’t a single female player among any of the teams during the first round. But now, the Shanghai Dragons have changed that, as they have officially signed Kim “Geguri” Se-Yeon to be on their team for the upcoming rounds.

Now, to be clear, she is one of four new players who are joining the Shanghai Dragons, who just happen to be the worst team in the Overwatch League. Their record of 0-8 prompted some big changes, and that meant getting some new blood, which included Kim. Kim is actually one of the highest ranked Overwatch players in Korea, and she’s known for her Zarya play, which you might get to see in the next round.

On Twitter, the official handle for the Shanghai Dragons welcomed their new teammates, and stated that these changes will help the team move forward in the Overwatch League:

“The Shanghai Dragons look forward to tackling the core problems of the team with the help of these new signings, as well as showcasing more competitiveness in skills and tactics with better performances in the matches ahead.”

Depending on how things go, Kim’s signing to the Dragons might bring more teams to eye female players of skill and consider bringing them onto their teams.

The truth of the matter is that this is a complicated issue, while diversity on the teams is desired, the goal of the League is to win, and that means having the best players, and sometimes that means having all male players. But, Kim proves that there are ladies out there who can kick as much butt as the boys, so, what do you do?

Guess we’ll find out as the League continues.
