Sakurai Talks Super Smash Bros Ultimate Character Inclusions

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a little over two weeks away from release on the Nintendo Switch, and gamers are looking for anything and everything to keep them going until the game releases. As such, it might bring them pleasure to know how Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Smash Bros, picked the characters for Ultimate. He revealed all of this in an interview that he did with Game Informer, where they went quite in depth with the questions, and he was happy to answer them.

In regards to the new characters that got added, he acknowledged a very interesting source that they looked at for some of them:

It is a project after all, so we take into consideration things like labor, man-hours, the time in which the title will be sold. We decide on the fighters from the very early planning stage, and from there, we calculate and begin production. We don’t add or remove any characters during the project.

We do things like base our consideration on the results of the Smash ballot, and also balance things out so that there’s a difference in the types of fighters.

Although, he admitted that one member of the roster was pretty much a sure thing and so they left a spot open for them:

By the way, as for Incineroar, during our planning stage we knew that a new Pokémon game was coming, so we intentionally kept one spot open for that, and we decided which character to create once we received more info on the title.

What’s going to be interesting now is to see how they used this process, or whether they used a different process for the DLC characters that are coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We’ve already seen one oddball character coming up with Piranha Plant, so who knows what Sakurai has cooking next.
