Brings back that old TMNT energy

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge takes a lot of inspiration from the old-school TMNT arcade games. But, don’t expect to see an experience as grueling as it was back then. This TMNT game features a lot of flexibility during its combat.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge comes with insane visuals and crisp animations, a compelling cast of characters, and a lot of TMNT action.

Shredder’s Revenge does not spend time with unnecessary melodrama or drawn-out plot sequences. Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael begin the game by eating pizza with April O’Neil and Splinter. Unfortunately, their good time is interrupted by a news alert informing them that Shredder and the Foot Clan have been up to no good at the Channel 6 headquarters. That’s how it starts, and the player gets to decide which hero they will play.

Shredder’s Revenge has a simple but varied combat system

Shredder’s Revenge and its gameplay feature a straightforward combat system: you have a standard attack, a super attack, a jump, and a dodge. As in a fighting game, attacking adversaries in Shredder’s Revenge fills your super meter, unleashing devastating, crazily animated super attacks when full. When numerous Turtles (or Turtle allies) simultaneously use their superpowers, it resembles a display of visually impressive special effects fireworks. Some people may call of visual clutter, but these graphical explosions were a joy to witness in my case.

Shredder’s Revenge doesn’t have particularly challenging battles, but the game lets you experiment. Charge your attack by holding the attack button. This enables you to break the enemy’s defense. Atack and jump simultaneously, and you will use an anti-air uppercut. Rush the opposition by dashing and attacking at the same. Shredder’s Revenge lets you style on the Foot Clan quite a lot.

Play the game on Hard from the start

Just don’t play the game on Normal. Shredder’s Revenge is a game that’s already quite forgiving. It gets a bit more intense later on, but skip the Normal difficulty. The combat feels much more rewarding when you actually have to fight and not just mash buttons to win.

Yet, if you immediately start Shredder’s Revenge on Hard mode, you’re in for a treat. See now the Foot clan knows how to inflict damage. Their attacks deal twice as much damage, and their combos are much more vicious.

Those that like a hardcore challenge have an option as well. Shredder’s Revenge calls it Arcade mode. This mode limits your lives and saves, so you must be careful. Now, when you combine Arcade mode and Hard mode, you have a tough brawler game at your hands.

Shredder’s Revenge is a brief game; on a Normal level, you should be able to complete the story in around two hours. Shredder’s Revenge won’t hold your interest for very long if you’re the kind of player that only completes a game once. The game is not an exception to the rule that beat ’em ups are supposed to be replayed for high scores and flawless runs.

Shredder’s Revenge wants you to do multiple runs

As you advance through the stages, the characters get points that unlock more unique attack gauges, health, and special techniques. Additionally, the game contains other optional tasks that you can accomplish for extra points. Replays are also encouraged by the leveling system and six-character roster. The playable characters in the game each have their own play styles and use various weapons in battle. Donatello, for instance, has an impressive range, but his attacks move somewhat more slowly than those of Leonardo or April.

At the beginning of the game, there’s only the default special attack. Later down the line, however, you get aerial supers, a dodging super, and more. There’s a gimmick where you can taunt enemies, and if you do it without getting punched in the face, you get a full special bar.

The story of Shredder’s Revenge may be completed in around two hours on Normal difficulty. Shredder’s Revenge will not hold your interest for long if you only play through a game once. Still, beat ’em up games are designed to be replayed multiple times to chase high scores and perfect runs, and this game is no different.

A lot of content for a beat ’em up game

As you continue through the stages, your characters will gain points, unlocking additional special attack gauges, health, and special actions. There are other alternative tasks you can complete for bonus points throughout the game. The roster of six characters and the leveling system also ask for several playthroughs. Each playable character has a distinct fighting style, using different weapons. Donatello, for instance, has excellent range, but his strikes are far slower than those of Leonardo or April.

Another brilliant addition is the lack of iFrame as you die. In these games, you get a couple of seconds of invincibility after you die to reposition. In Shredder’s Revenge, the enemy waits for you to respawn so they can immediately punch you in the mouth.

Slight sync issues

This becomes an issue in Shredder’s Revenge and its multiplayer mode. Syncing issues are a real problem in brawler games. I didn’t experience anything like that, but I’ve seen other reviews say that enemies sometimes warp around the screen, or just disappear entirely and become invisible forces that attack you.

Personally, I’d like a parry option. Shredder’s Revenge’s combat isn’t challenging, but I like being able to counter an attack. Fight’N Rage’s Street Fighter III-style parry blocks incoming blows and refills your special meter. A defensive option throughout planned assault stages might make some bosses less tedious.

Exceptional old-school art style

Now, Shredder’s Revenge is a game that looks fantastic. Large, well-animated, expressive sprites. Foot Clan ninjas labor part-time in NYC food courts, at work stations, or in Central Park before taking evil action. The game is full of cool tiny elements like these, not to mention fantastic Turtles appearances. And the animations are absolutely stellar and fluid. Each attack or special looks and feels weighty.

Which goes well with the game’s cartoony art style that evokes heavy NES TMNT nostalgia for some reason. I’m not sure why, but it makes me feel like a child dredging through Foot soldiers on my NES.

Conclusion – Should you buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge?

So should you buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge? It features superb visuals, responsive and punchy combat, and a cast of entertaining and enjoyable characters. Definitely a recommendation from me if you like brawlers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Especially if you like both!

Play Run 3 – the third installment in the Run game series. The game takes place in a tunnel outer the space. Your main goal is to control a little alien and run, move, and jump to pass through holes and traps. The screen will automatically rotate when you bump into the walls. So you can try moving along walls to change gravity and find the safest route for your alien. The game is over if you fall into one of the holes. The tunnels are also full of breakable tiles that fall down when you step into.
