Shovel Knight Showdown Mode Broken Down

Shovel Knight is one of the true wonders of the Kickstarter age. The game came to the service from Yacht Club Games and promised a true 8-bit experience that hadn’t been seen in some time. And the game not only was a success, it became a phenomenon. It spawned three spinoffs featuring the villains of the main game, Shovel Knight became a part of numerous gaming titles, got an Amiibo, and is now going to be in Super Smash Bros Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. And as if that wasn’t enough, it’s getting a new mode via Shovel Knight Showdown.

This is actually the last promised mode from the Kickstarter, and it’ll allow players to play as one of the many characters seen in Shovel Knight in either 1v1 battles or four-play free-for-alls. IGN talked with Yacht Club Games about Shovel Knight Showdown, and the dev team noted:

“Originally we imagined a pared-down, almost minigame-style addendum to Shovel Knight. It seemed like there was a lot of room to create something unique with a game that combined platforming with combat- something simpler and more frenetic than a fighting game, but more interesting and deep than a no-frills party game.”

But above all else, the main point of the game is to ensure that the characters are shown off well:

“One of our main goals for Shovel Knight Showdown is to celebrate the weird and wonderful characters in Shovel Knight. So if you have a favorite character you want to see playable, chances are someone on the development team is championing their inclusion too.”

There’s no doubt that gamers will love this mode, as they’ve loved everything that Yacht Club Games has made for the franchise, and though a release date for it has not been given as of yet, it is only a matter of time.
