Street Fighter V Getting Loot Box-Like System Via “Fighting Chance”

Sometimes, you have to wonder why developers do things. Especially when the writing is most definitely on the wall. Capcom had already made plenty of mistakes with the release of Street Fighter V. They made a solid fighting game, no doubt, but unlike previous Street Fighter titles, this one was lacking in modes, and it made the game feel hollow. As such, they had to release DLC over the next year to fix it, and then break their promise not to do a “super” version when they released Arcade Edition. And now, they’re doing something even more controversial.

What are they doing? They’re basically adding Loot Boxes to Street Fighter V. Before you panic, it’s not EXACTLY Loot Boxes, but it’s pretty dang close. Basically, a new update is coming to the game that will see the character Menat opening up a Fortune Teller place. When you go to her, she’ll give you a “reading”, and you’ll get items called “Fighting Chance”.

Street Fighter V

the Fighting Chance will give you randomly selected items from several tiers of things. First is “Battle Goods”, which can be used in Survival Mode to help you last longer. On the collectible side of things, you can get new color outfits for certain characters, new outfits entire (one mentioned was the Cannon Spike outfit for Cammy White), and you can also get art from the Street Fighter series.

The kicker here is that you can only use in-game currency to purchase these fortune tellings. And you cannot buy in-game currency with real money, which is good. However, many fans are already voicing their displeasure in this new addition. Not only does it feel forced, if players want to get these special outfits they’ll need to either be lucky in the “fortunes”, or have a lot of in-game currency, which can be tough to get a times.

We’ll see how the backlash comes out when the update arrives on June 25th.
