  • The Long Dark

The Long Dark is an exploration-survival experience with no zombies or monsters in it, just a harsh frozen wilderness and the beasts that live in this wilderness.
You are alone, and it's up to you to survive in this cold place, with no help coming.
There are two modes in The Long Dark, the Wintermute mode and the Survival mode.
Wintermute is an episodic story-mode with two out of the five episodes available. In Episode One, called "Do Not Go Gentle" you play as bush pilot Will Mackenzie, who got separated from Dr. Astrid Greenwood after a plane crash. Will tries to find Dr. Astrid while also surviving, when he finds the small town of Milton. He slowly starts to understand that he is in the middle of a silent apocalypse.
Episode Two called "Luminance Fugue" continues Will's search for Astrid, and it takes him deeper into this harsh wilderness. He meets a mysterious trapper that could help him find Astrid, but the question is, can Will trust this person?
The other mode in The Long Dark, Survival Mode, is a non-narrative survival sandbox that will challenge your survival skills. This mode will delete your save when you die, so be sure to monitor your Hunger, Thirst, Cold, and Fatigue.
You have to hunt for food, search for items, all while trying to evade Wolves and Bears, as even though you hunt some animals, others will hunt you.
Do you have what it takes to survive in this cold wilderness?

Holy macaroni it's the final Five of the Best of the year! This is our weekly series where we sprinkle some love on the overlooked parts of games. We've talked about potions, caves, hands, shops, hubs, maps, mountains and many more. There's a Five of the Best archive if you fancy a butcher's. Snow! I wonder about snow. Hardly any falls where I live so whenever it does, everyone gets very excited for it. The ugly grey concrete we see every day is hidden under a fluffy white blanket, as if to say...

There’s an old saying in gaming monitor circles that once you’ve gone ultrawide, there’s no going back. Indeed, having had the vast Samsung CRG9 hogging my desk for a bit last month, I’m inclined to agree. But what do games actually look like on a screen this wide? It’s one thing looking at lovely wallpapers, but another thing entirely to have a game occupy your entire field of vision. To find out, and more importantly show you, I’ve rounded up all the very ...
