Back 4 Blood and its Gameplay

The first-person co-op zombie shooter that’s going to bring back the zombie craze, that’s what Back 4 Blood is.

Punchy and responsive weapons, horrifying zombies, lots of weapons, and a ton of survival. It’s everything you need to have a blast with 3 of your friends. And the game’s doing a lot to add a ton of replayability so your squad can enjoy the game for a long, long time.

Of course, there’s also the eight-player PvP mode where humans face off against the so-called “Ridden” in a bloody deathmatch. There’s just enough similarity to other games of this type to lure a ton of fans to the game, but enough innovation and fresh ideas to keep everyone playing Back 4 Blood for a long period of time without it feeling repetitive or bland.

This time around, the survivors aren’t running away. They’re Cleaners, a group tasked with killing as much of the Ridden as they possibly can. After all, who’s going to take the world back if not us?
Let’s see what terrifying monstrosities we’re going up against (or playing as in the PvP mode) together!

The Ridden

We’ll talk a bit more about how the Ridden came to be later. For now, let’s see what kinds of monster Back 4 Blood has to offer and what their abilities are!

SNITCHER

This is one of the Ridden creatures you need to kill on sight. If the Snitcher sees you, its scream will call forth a massive Ridden horde to your location.

TALLBOY

You’d think the Tallboy is a type of Ridden that charges you immediately. Yet, you’d be surprised to know that it’s a stalker type that can periodically sprint forward to close the gap. When they’re close, their gigantic club-like arm will come crashing down on any poor Cleaner that didn’t run away. Their shoulders are their weak spot.

REEKER

Huge, slow, and filled with revolting sticky pus. When they die, Reekers explode, knocking back any Cleaner in close proximity and covering them with the aforementioned pus.

STINGER

Unlike the Tallboy, the Stinger hides in the shadows all the time. It’s a type of Ridden that can cross any surface and pin you down with their phlegm. If there’s not a teammate close by or you have the breakout card, you’re in for a bad time.

The rest of the Ridden will be officially revealed after the game’s launch and I’ll update the list then.

The Cleaners

Now’s the time to shine some light on the brave people that are going around and ridding the world of the Ridden. You can also watch the Cleaners in action in this video right here.

HOFFMAN

Abilities:
  • Spawn ammo w/ kills
  • +1 Offensive Item Slot
  • Team Ammo Capacity
The happiest man to live in the middle of an apocalypse. A man that prepared for this day for his entire life. Once his mother passed away and his supplies dwindled, Hoffman decided to leave his boarded-up house and take on the world the Devil Worm created.

Hoffman is a kind-hearted and capable Cleaner that always wants to help out his team, which is the newfound family he always wished for.

WALKER

Abilities:

  • Precision Kills increase accuracy
  • Damage
  • Team Health

A former Army Ranger and a war-torn veteran, Walker is an expert when it comes to guns and front-line combat. He’s the oldest son in the family of five. Since he was raised in a blue-collar family where hard work is the best quality a man can have, Elijah Walker doesn’t speak much. But when he does, his fellow Cleaners listen and follow his lead.

DOC

Abilities:

  • Heals low health teammates even without items
  • Healing Efficiency
  • Team Trauma Resistance

Doc doesn’t tolerate nonsense and has a strong, pragmatic outlook on life. She expected a lot of things when she first came to America, but things turned out quite differently. While usually a lone wolf, a person that sacrificed her social life to achieve more with her career, Doc finally found a friend in Mom.

Doc is an insanely good doctor and an even better shot. Although it’s still not sure what she’s actually better at, shooting Ridden or patching up Cleaners. Maybe both?

MOM

Abilities:

  • Instant Revive
  • +1 Support Inventory
  • +1 Team Extra Life

The voice of survivors in Finleyville. A woman that takes on any challenge and always puts others above herself. Mom only has faith in her Cleaners as other leaders’ strategies often came with dire consequences, one being the tragic death of her son. Now Mom has only one goal, and that’s to make the Ridden pay for all the pain they’ve caused.

HOLLY

Abilities:

  • Recover Stamina w/ kills
  • Damage Resistance
  • Team Stamina

Holly lost her entire family to the Devil Worm. However, that allows her to channel all her energy into one thing: being one hell of a Cleaner. She’s the glue that keeps the team together. Resilient, skilled, and always making sure everyone survives with her trusty “Dottie” spiked baseball bat, Holly makes sure the Cleaners’ morale is always shining bright.

EVANGELO

Abilities:

  • Breakout of Grabs
  • Stamina Regen
  • Team Movement Speed

Evangelo is the youngest of the Cleaners. However, he’s a quick learner and a proven fighter. Above all, Evangelo is a loyal and devoted Cleaner that likes to talk a lot but is always going to help you in the direst of situations without any hesitation.

KARLEE

Abilities:

  • Sense Hazards
  • +1 Quick Inventory
  • +1 Team Use Speed

Karlee is a survivor that managed to stay alive purely by relying on her own skills. After the Collapse, she mostly wondered on the outskirts of Fort Hope. She keeps to her herself. While she didn’t make the best impressions early on, the rise of the Ridden made her stick to the Cleaners to help them with all her might.

JIM

Abilities:

  • Precisions Kills increase damage
  • +1 ADS Speed
  • Team Weakspot Damage

Jim loved spending his childhood in the countryside with his dad. Hunting and trapping was a passion that never truly left him. When he came back from the military, his home was already torn apart by the Collapse. A deadly shot from far away, Jim spends most of his time sniping the Ridden and hunting the Pennsylvania countryside for traces of Ridden infestation.

Back 4 Blood and its Card System

Each player has a deck of special Cards. These are essentially perks, some act as stat increases, others modify your weapons, and so on. For example, Pyro is a Talent Card that increases health temporarily for each Ridden you kill with fire. As most titles with this kind of system, Back 4 Blood wants PC and console players to constantly switch up their playstyle with these cards.

As you might imagine, Back 4 Blood offers a ton of customization with its Card system, which you can see explained in video form right here. The cards you pick can greatly alter your playstyle. Be a fast-running medic, an explosive expert that has fire resistance, or a warrior that demolishes Ridden with lighting fast melee weapons.

Now I know what some people might think, and for a good reason. Will Back 4 Blood on PC and console become a pay2win game that sells cards individually or through card packs for real-life money? No, Turtle Rocks said the Cards are only available through regular in-game progression.

Also, anyone that doesn’t want to fiddle around with a card deck can use pre-made decks for both PvE and PvP.

Back 4 Blood also has skins, and while some are unlocked through progression, others will be available only through a cosmetic shop. But these skins won’t have any effects on the gameplay.

The Game Director

An advanced AI that keeps track of everything that goes on. Most importantly, the Game Director makes sure the match stays fresh and exciting. There’s no time to relax and enjoy a leisurely game of Back 4 Blood. Oh no, you’re always staying on high alert, keeping an eye for the next threat.

When you start a mission, the Game Director plays a couple of Corruption Cards. Some of them make the Ridden wear armor, others include unique Ridden like the powerful Hag that you can defeat for bonus rewards. However, there’s also an Event Corruption Card like The Dark. This Corruption Card cuts off the lights and let’s lose a ton of Snitches. Silent play is crucial in surviving The Dark event.

Corruption Cards are there to modify the environment, the Ridden, and add more challenges. Essentially, each match of Back 4 Blood ends up feeling unique.

Back 4 Blood and its Story

As with most games of this type, Back 4 Blood doesn’t share a lot when it comes to the story. We know the Collapse happened thanks to the Devil Worm destroying everything and infecting people. While some speculation says the Devil Worm is an alien, nothing’s been confirmed by the developers as of right now.

Unlike most games that feature infected and survivors, Back 4 Blood offers a much more optimistic battlefield where the humans actively fight back to reclaim what’s lost instead of just trying to survive. Besides the backstory of the Cleaners, there’s not much regarding the overall story of the game.

Will Turtle Rock give more insight about the Collapse and the Devil Worm through DLC and expansions? That remains to be seen, but for now, we only know a tiny bit about this whole situation and what caused it.
