The Half-Life franchise returns

Valve went out of its way to explain to the fans of the Half-Life franchise why exactly Alyx is a VR title. As you can imagine, a lot of people got jolly excited when a new entry was announced. Then, the jolly excitement turned into jolly confusion when Alyx was revealed to be a VR game set between the events of the first and the second game.

Still, this means that we are one step closer to getting Half-Life 3. Naturally, this extremely sensitive subject was brought up in this documentary. Valve devs and employees are painfully aware of the weight that this franchise carries. Even the mention of Half-Life 3 got them all riled up. This is to be expected, as a third main entry in this series needs to be as perfect as humanly possible. That’s what the fans expect even if these expectations are extremely unreasonable.

Half-Life 3 is a possibility if Alyx impresses the fans

The Verge article that I read just asked a really big question. “Does this mark a full return to the series? Should we expect more?”, and oh boy, is that the question that everyone wanted to ask ever since Alyx got announced. But, the response is not what I was expecting at all. David Speyrer, the game’s designer, said this:

Yes. It’s probably no surprise that many people at Valve have been wanting to get back to the Half-Life universe for a long time, and this experience has only reinforced that. In the process of creating Half-Life: Alyx, we’ve had to explore new ways to tell stories with these characters and this world, and we’ve discovered a lot of new gameplay experiences that go beyond what we’ve been able to do before. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how people react to Half-Life: Alyx once it’s out, but we’d love to continue pushing forward

Does this mean that Alyx is bringing us closer to Half-Life 3? In some ways yes, and in others, no. You see, even if Alyx is a breakout success, it won’t immediately make Valve starting working on HF3. Since, as stated before, that is an unexplainably huge undertaking. One that will require many years of extensive and immense work. But, if it is really popular, it means that Valve will most likely start planning the development for the third game in one way or another.

Whatever the case may be, this is an exciting period for gamers all around. Valve even recommends playing Episode 2 before playing Alyx. Thankfully, a Half-Life 2: Episode 2 PC game key is available on HRK Game for a great price right now, so go pick it up and play it!
