Metal Gear Survive Requires Constant Online Connection

Metal Gear Survive is a very curious title in the Metal Gear franchise. It was born out of a scene from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, where a group of Venom Snake’s men survives a massive explosion, which then turns into a wormhole, and sucks them into another dimension. This dimension is full of zombie-like monsters, and now they have to scavenge what they can to build a base and try to survive. For those who know the franchise, this is a very different game-type for the series.

Konami is banking on this game doing well, and also bringing new life to the franchise now that creator/writer Hideo Kojima is no longer with the company (more on that later). A beta for the game released the other day, and new details have come out because of it. For example, Gamespot reports that the game will require a constant internet connection, this is regardless of whether you’re playing the singleplayer or multiplayer mode. According to Konami, this is because they want a “seamless” experience for players:

“Metal Gear Survive’s online connectivity requirements were built to support a seamless integration between single player and co-op. This will also enable us to provide ongoing content post-launch.”

Another revelation is that the game does have microtransactions, which will grant you gear as well as cosmetic items to help boost your experience in the game.

Finally, Konami said that the singleplayer mode would take between 15-20 hours to complete. While a bit short for a Metal Gear game, it’s still a lot to play through, and that’s before going into multiplayer.

Metal Gear Survive has a massive hill to climb though. Many feel that this game is dishonoring what Kojima did with the main series, and being that he was wrongfully fired from Konami, many aren’t going to buy this title out of respect for him.

We’ll have to see how sales go when it releases February 20th.
