Epic Games Releases “State of Development” For Fortnite Battle Royale

When Epic Games released Fortnite, they likely didn’t expect it to do too well. After all, the game was announced many years ago, and finally had been released last year. However, once they added the free Battle Royale mode, everything changed. Players flocked to the title, so much so that 3.4 million people played the game at one time last Sunday. Beating the record set by competitor PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. However, this came at a cost, mainly, the game’s servers can handle the load.

Because of that, the game is experiencing issues with its online play. Epic Games is fully aware of this, and as such, released a special “State Of Development” in regards to what they’re doing, and what they’re going to do going forward. First and foremost, they addressed the recent issues.

We were not able to stay ahead of our continued growth and multiple of our backend services have been struggling under load the last several weeks (e.g. friends functionality and general login service). And we also shipped v2.3.0 with significant bugs. We don’t consider either acceptable. We have changed our release plans & processes to help improve quality of client builds, and scrambled people to make traction on backend scalability by any means possible.

Further improvements they have outlined including being in the Lobby for as little time as possible. They also want to help with streaming the game. For those who have the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X, you can expect a patch that’ll allow you to play the game at 60FPS.

The team happily notes that art and weapons for Fortnite are coming along swimmingly. And that you can expect even more special outfits and gear to play with in the near future. So while there are issues going on with the title right now, the future does look bright for Fortnite.
