Pokemon CEO Talks Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is the hottest console on the market today, and one of the reasons for this is that the games for the console keep selling well. Just this past Friday it released Mario Tennis Aces, which had a very successful demo a few weeks previously. As for the future, there are big 3rd party releases like Octopath Traveler and Dragon Ball FighterZ, as well as big 1st party titles like Pokemon Let’s Go and Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Everyone agrees that Nintendo is doing well.

This includes Pokemon CEO Tsunekazu, who had a chat with Famitsu about the Nintendo Switch and what he thinks about it. This is perfect as Pokemon is getting a game this year and a core release next year on the system. The CEO agreed that the reason the Switch is selling well is because of the software:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey as well as other titles also had great timing and is helping widespread adoption. On top of that there are games like Nintendo Labo that include elements you don’t normally see in games, so it’s the ideal environment for a platform. I think this is a great opportunity for us to introduce new games and bring new experiences that will earn even more fans.”

However, like most when the console first was announced, he wasn’t sure that the Nintendo Switch would sell. After all the previous Nintendo console, the Wii U was a massive failure sales-wise. But, one thing turned it around:

“I don’t know if this has the ability to persuade the people who said a year ago that the Nintendo Switch wouldn’t sell [laughter], but up until that point a machine that integrated both handheld functionality and a home console was unheard of, so to be honest it was hard to know how it would sell. I didn’t see it selling. However, the overwhelming fun of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild made it popular. I think that had a big impact.”

Hopefully we’ll get more information about the core Pokemon title soon.
