The Elder Scrolls Online – Summerset: First Thoughts

During the last few weeks, we have spent some time exploring Summerset, the latest expansion of The Elder Scrolls Online. Offering the opportunity to explore a whole new region, the expansion reinforces the strengths of the MMO and shows that it has distanced itself a lot from its original form. Is that a good thing? Sure seems like.

Summerset’s main story is satisfying, but completing the whole storyline is not challenging at all. As a newcomer to Summerset, you are soon approached by Razum-dar, an agent of the Queen, who sees in your character the perfect ally to deal with local problems. Since there is no restriction on the areas you can explore, the level of difficulty is dynamic and you can start missions in any order you want.

After finishing the main storyline of Summerset, we felt like we had a good reason to stick to the game. Nowadays, The Elder Scrolls Online offers an experience as rich as the single-player games in the series, and plenty of the content can be enjoyed alone, but of course, the main focus should still be playing with others (or against).

Summerset’s side missions are also really enjoyable, but we strongly recommend you to queue for a few battlegrounds and dungeons while you are at it. These offer a nice break from the solo play, and also bring huge amounts of experience points which is great if you started from scratch. Sadly, the expansion did not bring class balances that work well in PvP, and some current builds are clearly overpowered versus others, at least in Battlegrounds. In case you have abandoned the game for a while and are curious about what it offers now, exploring Summerset’s new content might just be a great way to dive back in.

The Elder Scrolls Online is one of the better MMORPGs out there, and nowadays with the state of the genre, it is not exactly an easy task to find a title that you can stick to. Let us know what you guys think about the expansion and the game itself.
